Geofencing FAQ

Quick answers on how geofencing works and what to expect

1. How is this Geofencing different from IG Location & Interest Targeting?

What you tried on Instagram wasn't true geofencing — that was Meta's location/interest targeting, which explains the random results. Real geofencing uses actual GPS pings from mobile devices through ad exchanges, so it's far more accurate (building-level, not just "somewhere in this zip code"), fraud filtering is better, and you can retarget someone for days or weeks after they physically walk through the fence.

2. How does Traditional Geofencing work?

A fence is drawn around a real location — a competitor school, an event, a neighborhood. Any phone that enters gets tagged (anonymously) as a device ID, then served ads across the internet and apps for a period after.

3. Where do the ads actually show up?

Not on Instagram — this isn't a social platform thing at all, it's device-based. Ads show up in whatever app or mobile site inventory the ad exchange reaches: think free weather apps, games, news apps, and mobile web banners.

4. Can the ad actually execute a CTA, or is it just a banner?

It's a real clickable ad — banner or video — linking to a landing page with a contact form. The CTA works fine, it's not just sitting there passively.

5. Is there a funnel? What happens after someone sees the ad?

Geofencing gets you the impression and the click. The add-on service, Meta Retargeting Campaign, includes a landing page and contact form that feeds leads into your CRM for your own follow-up, nurturing, and list building.

6. Can you include an offer?

Yes! A real offer in the creative — a higher, then lower value based price, a special contest, a limited-time deal — is one of the biggest levers for actually getting clicks to convert.

7. How many schools can be Geofenced per campaign?

One campaign gets 50k impressions. We recommend starting with one school at that level so the impressions stay focused instead of diluted.

8. What is the best launch date for high season lead time?

Aug/Sept is back-to-school, Jan is re-enrollment. Rule of thumb: launch 4–6 weeks out. The platform needs time to build the device pool before retargeting actually works — launching the same week as the push wastes the front end of the budget on a thin audience. For Aug/Sept, start early-to-mid July (that's now). For Jan, start early-to-mid December.

9. How many ads are served and how often?

Depends on budget, but frequency capping is adjustable — usually around 3–5 impressions per device per day or week, so people aren't over-served and money isn't wasted on repeats.

10. How's it tracked?

Standard stuff: impressions, click-through rate, and conversions (form-fills) are tied back to the campaign.
